1️⃣ Start slow and introduce small amounts. This is to prevent any upset tummies and this will encourage them to like their new found food.
⠀
2️⃣ Include a probiotic. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that will help transition your pet. If your pet has been eating a commercial diet their gut Flora may have compromised and may need help to repair and restore a healthy good and bad bacteria balance.

3️⃣ Include organs and bones. Organs are natures multivitamins including them will give your pet an abundance of nutrients. Bone will provide all the minerals your pets needs and has the perfect balance of calcium to phosphorus ratio

4️⃣ Feed variety. Variety is key! This way you will feed a range of different nutrients while balancing their meals over times. This can also prevent allergies arising.

5️⃣ Veg and fruits are a great way to provide extra nutrients and antioxidants. Dogs are omnivores and can be feed more veg. Where as cats are obligate carnivores they have very little need for fruits and veg. Only very small amounts are need to mimic the gut contents of their prey.

6️⃣ Monitor their weight. Weighing your pet regularly and looking at their waist line will help keep their weight and body score in good condition. If you see that your pet is getting a smaller waist line increase their meal. If their waist line is starting to get bigger and out of shape, decrease your meals slightly.

I hear the hype of everyday cat owners bragging about the fact that they are feeding their cat a grain free commercial prepared diet. If you are going to feed a commercial pet food please do not skip the grains on this one! Why? Here’s why 👇🏼

1️⃣ They are high in legumes which means they are high in starch content. High starch content means that the starch can either deplete taurine levels or make taurine less bioavailable.
⠀
2️⃣ They contain anti-nutrients such as phytates, lectins, saponins and trypsin inhibitors that interferes with taurine absorption.
⠀
👉🏼 Taurine is an essential amino acid that is essential for cats and without it can cause cardiomyopathy that can be fatal. (Pets have died previously from this)

3️⃣ Lots of soybean, peas, and soy based products are used which can cause a lot of digestive issues, interferes with digestion and is well renowned to trigger food allergies.

4️⃣ Diets that are high in trypsin inhibitors can cause enlargement of the pancreas and pancreatic cancers.

5️⃣ Grain free diets are high in silicates which in return promote the formation of urinary stones.

6️⃣ Soy and soy based products are linked to hyperthyroidism and can cause damage to the thyroids.

Just a reminder to make sure you keep your pets safe and away from toxins this Christmas. It’s an exiting time and I know they are all going to get spoiled and get into a thing or two.

Remember to not give cooked bones, avoid fatty off cuts, no chocolate

We don’t want to have a Christmas emergency and your fur baby to get toxicity from foods that we or other may share intentionally or unintentionally for not knowing certain food can be dangerous.

The Christmas period is the busiest period that pets end up needing veterinary treatment.

Liver is natures multivitamin, feeding raw liver you can be assure that you are providing your pet with a great concentrated mixed of different vitamins and minerals that your pet needs.

The main well-known nutrient of liver is the amount of vitamin A that it holds. On average liver has 5613.84 mcg. Vitamin A is a very important nutrient, it is a fat-soluble vitamin. Vitamin A and liver is essential for a vast variety of reasons.

1️⃣ It enhances immunity and acts as an antioxidant to fight and prevent free radicals circulating the body that helps to prevent diseases, infections and even cancer. Vitamin A also help to slow doing the natural aging process.

2️⃣ It is needed for the formation of bones teeth and to repair and maintenance of epithelial tissues.
⠀
3️⃣ Protein can not be utilised unless vitamin A is present in the body. Liver on average has around 23g of protein. Protein is need for strong bones and muscles. Protein aids in muscle recovery and is needed to help repair cells and make new ones.

4️⃣ Liver is great for anaemic dogs this is due because of the iron content within liver. Liver again has on average 5.54mg of iron. Iron is essential for many enzymes that keep the immune system healthy and the production of haemoglobin that also provides cells with oxygen.

5️⃣ Raw liver provides 4.52 of the trace mineral zinc. liver is fantastic to feed pets with skin issues and male dogs that are stud dogs.

Now I’m not the biggest fan of grains but I must say I am a fan of ancient grains, sprouted grains and whole grain oats.
⠀
The rest of the other grains such as pasta and rice I wouldn’t bother with. They offer little nutritional value & increase inflammation, they are hard on the digestive system. Plus not to mention they basically breakdown in the body into sugar. (It’s like feeding pure sugar to your cat or dog). That’s a big no from me 🙅🏼‍♀️

Oats however, I recommend incorporating them into your dogs diet from time to time.

Here are 4 reasons why I recommend oats😌

1️⃣ Digestion health
Oats are pack full of fibre that turn into short chain fatty acids. Very healthy for the gastrointestinal tract and can help relieve diarrhoea

2️⃣ Can help your pet put on weight.
If your pet is underweight oats can help your pet gain weight. Oats have the highest fat content out of all the grains. Fat is the best to help put on weight and contains the highest energy compared to protein and carbs.

3️⃣ High Protein
Oats have a high protein content, they contain about 15% protein. Protein is needed by all cells in the body. Protein helps to repair damaged cells & tissues

4️⃣ Rich in beta-glucan
Beta-glucan is very beneficial substance found in oats. It can help by promoting heart health, anti-inflammatory, improves insulin responses while decreasing cholesterol levels all while boosting immune system health.

How do you feed them to your dog?🐕‍🦺
⠀
Place 1 tablespoon of oats into a cup & add some water that covers the oats. Leave over night and feed the next day. This is ideal for a 10kg dog. You can increase or decrease the amount pending on size of your pet.
⠀
Grains should only make up 10% of your dogs overall diet. You can also have them cooked However, Cooking will decrease the nutritional value.
⠀
Always soak your oats overnight, never give oats straight from the packet. Unsoaked oats can irritate the digestive tract leading to bloat & gas. Soaking ensures that the Phytic acid won’t rob your dog’s nutrients. Soaking also turns off enzyme inhibitors, this means the oats will now be up to 50% more bioavailable!! 😄

🤔Why do cats do this?

Coughed up hair balls are the result from their fur getting blocked in the outer part of the stomach called the pyloris after the cat has groomed themselves and removed all of their loose fur.

The thing is your cat is designed to process fur. If your kitty is regularly coughing and gagging up a hair ball this is a fair sign that your kitty is having trouble passing the hair. This can mean that he or she might have an underlying healthy issue, as hair balls are a symptom and not a problem.

There are a few reasons as to why all of a sudden your cat is having trouble with hair balls.
⠀
🐈‍⬛ Your cat may be excessively grooming them selves. Due to a skin irritation, allergies or can be due to being stressed and having anxiety.
🐈‍⬛ Your cat is now shedding heaps of hair due to seasonal changes.
🐈‍⬛ They are having gastrointestinal issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, lymphoma or motility stomach disorders.

Strawberries are a great addition to their meals and for snacks you can even give them as a reward when training. (My puppies love them!).

Strawberries are very healthy and full of antioxidants. They provide your dog with fibre and loaded with vitamin c which is an anti-stress vitamin.

Not only are they healthy they contain malic acid. What is malic acid? It is an enzyme that is found naturally in strawberries that can help whiten your pets teeth by helping to remove surface discolouration.

Meanwhile 61% of cats start to show signs around 6 years old. By the time cats are 12 years old, it is reported that 90% of cats show signs of arthritis. 😥

Here are 10 ways that you can either help your pet with arthritis or help prevent it. 😄

1️⃣ Keep your pets lean and at their ideal weight. This is a big contributing factor and very important.

2️⃣ Avoid excess jumping and spinning around or strenuous exercise all the time. This puts lots of stress on the joints.

3️⃣ Feed whole fresh foods and avoid feeding too much white rice or white potato as they are high glycemic foods that are pro-inflammatory.

4️⃣ Add fish to their meals once a week. Sardines and pilchards are great. If you can’t find fresh. You can buy sardines in the can at the supermarket. Make sure they are in water and not oil and that you choose no added salt.

5️⃣ Supplement the diet with green lipped muscles. They are a superfood and contain Chondroitin and glucosamine. They are full of healthy amino acids and omega 3.

6️⃣ Supplement with shark cartilage as it too has Chondroitin and glucosamine that will help your pets body to repair and rebuilt cartilage in joints.

I must admit I didn’t always feed raw food to my dogs. Just like many of us I thought commercial petfood was all they need and what was best for them.
⠀
To be honest I never really thought about what is actually in the commercial petfood I fed, just that it was complete and balanced and labeled as a healthy food that will provide all of the nutrients my pet needs. Enough said! I didn’t question it. Why would I need to? My vet recommends it too.
⠀
Until… I did my vet nursing course. I was in my final stages of finishing my cert IV and on to the nutrition unit. I was very much looking forward to know all about petfood and how its made and what food was in it. I got pretty disappointed when all we got told was to read the back of the label to see how much food was recommended for the weight of the pet.
⠀
I searched for answers and the truth is no one really knew what was in the petfood only what the bag said. I now know it’s full of absolutely shit! (Even the high end brands). While searching I found exactly what was in commercial petfood and it wasn’t pretty.
⠀
They do not promote health nor longevity. Day in and day out your pets are eating high carb, high grains and low quality diets. If your pets diet is processed it’s low quality. It is the main reason so many of our pets are suffering with issues like arthritis, allergies, ear infections, skin issues, gastrointestinal disorders and cancers.
⠀
They promote inflammation, they compromised the immune system and your pets digestive system is not designed to eat highly processed foods with preservatives, chemicals, artificial compounds and only receive synthetic vitamins.
⠀
Fresh whole food is absolutely without a doubt the best thing possible that you can feed your pets. For millions of years wild dogs and wolves have survived off raw foods. Just because we have domesticated them doesn’t mean they have evolved to eat what commercial petfood companies say they should eat.

You may or may not know this, but dogs can manufacture their own vitamin C in their gut. Because of this vitamin c is rarely put into commercial petfood as it isn’t an essential nutrient by AFCO standards. Many believe dogs don’t need vitamin C.

Dogs might be able to manufacture vitamin c but are they manufacturing enough in adequate amounts to be utilised effectively by the body ?

It all depends on the diet. If your dog isn’t receiving a high quality diet or is on a cooked diet or commercial petfood diet without a vitamin c supplement. Your dog won’t be able to manufacture adequate amounts of vitamin c to protect them against many stresses put on their cells.
